Review:
Style & Language Use
- Style & Language Use refers to word
choice, correctness and variety of sentences, and the appropriateness
of both to your audience.
- Style is determined by the decisions you
make as a writer, including word choice and sentence structure. Style
= Tone + Voice.
- Audience is the reader(s) of your essay.
- Tone is the manner of expression that
comes through from your writing.
- Voice is the personality that comes
through from your writing.
- Word Choice affects tone, attitude, and
imagery (what the reader pictures).
- Denotation is a word's dictionary
definition. Connotation, the associations and reactions people
have toward a word, is often more powerful. Connotations can create
positive (slender), neutral (slim), or negative (skinny) reactions.
- Run-on sentences (too much) and sentence
fragments (too little) are two common errors in sentence structure.
- There are four main sentence structures:
- Simple
- Compound
- Complex
- Compound-Complex
