4.12 Section
Summary:
Content & Development
- Development & Content refers to how
well your writing develops ideas with specific, accurate, and relevant
details (facts, examples, reasons, anecdotes, illustrations, etc.)
- You should think of a method of development as a
way to expand a part of the whole writing you are working on. For
example, you might develop a reason by telling a story that illustrates
the point of the reason.
- The details are the content of your
paper. The details make the difference between an a cartoon of a and a
portrait, with color and shape and texture and depth.
- The content must be developed by various methods
of development:
- Comparing and Contrasting
- Establishing an Order or Series
- Defining by Key Characteristics
- Defining by Familiar Examples
- Using Cause and Effect
- Illustrating with a Story
- Classifying
You can usually prewrite
for a method of development by making a list and then selecting from it
or arranging it in an effective order. Drafting a method of development
will generally involve a paragraph or two, depending on the size of the
essay.
